Honest Online Shopping Tips: How to Avoid Disappointing Purchases

You order something that looks great in the photos. It arrives, you open it, and it's not what you expected: thinner fabric, a different color, a size that doesn't match the chart. Most of us have been there. The good news is that a few minutes of checking before you buy can prevent a lot of these disappointments.

It's a simple checklist you can use on any site.

Online shopping checklist graphic: read low-star reviews, look for repeated complaints, check the return policy

1. Read the low-star reviews first

Five-star reviews tell you what can go right. One- to three-star reviews tell you what can go wrong, and whether it matters to you. A complaint about slow shipping may not bother you, while a complaint about the fabric being see-through might change your mind. Read a handful of recent low-star reviews before deciding.

2. Look for repeated complaints

One negative review can be bad luck. The same complaint from many people is a pattern. Watch for words that repeat:

  • "Runs small" or "runs large"
  • "Color is different from the photo"
  • "Broke after a few uses"
  • "Smells strong out of the box"
  • "Not as described"

If several people mention the same problem, assume it could happen to you, too.

3. Trust customer photos over studio photos

Product photos are taken with good lighting, styling and sometimes editing. Customer photos show the item in normal light, on real bodies and in real homes. Many listings use styled or AI-generated images for inspiration, so customer photos and the written description are the most reliable way to see what actually arrives.

4. Check sizes and measurements, not labels

For clothing, compare the size chart with a similar item you already own. Measure it flat and compare inches or centimeters. For home items, measure the space where it will go. "Large" and "small" mean different things to different brands.

5. Read the return policy and the fine print

Before you buy, find out:

  • How many days you have to return it.
  • Whether returns are free or you pay shipping.
  • Whether some categories (intimates, beauty, personalized items, final-sale items) can't be returned.
  • Whether you get a refund or store credit.
  • Whether the item is sold and shipped by the store itself or by a third-party seller with different rules.

Keep tags on and packaging intact until you're sure you're keeping something.

6. Buy from trusted stores and platforms

Stick with stores and platforms you know, with clear contact information and customer protection. Be careful with prices that seem far below everywhere else, websites with no return address, or sellers who only accept unusual payment methods. When in doubt, search the store name plus "reviews" or "scam."

7. Compare real pros and cons

Before ordering, write down (or just think through) two or three things you really want from the product and one or two deal-breakers. Then check the reviews against that list. This keeps you focused on what matters to you, not just on what looks appealing.

8. Give yourself a pause

If you're not sure, leave the item in your cart for a day. If you still want it after rereading the reviews and return policy, that's a good sign. If you forget about it, you've saved money.
